An important part of our work focuses on fire safety and ventilation design and modelling studies for underground rail and metro systems and for road tunnels. Example rail projects include Crossrail, London Underground (eg. Victoria Station Upgrade), and metro systems across Europe, the Middle-East, India and the Asia-Pacific region. Example road tunnel projects include the refurbishment of Blackwall Northbound Tunnel, the A3 Hindhead road tunnel in Surrey, and the SMART dual purpose stormwater / road tunnel in Malaysia. The job will involve developing holistic fire strategies and performance-based designs, involving fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis as appropriate. There will also be opportunities to get involved in the development of new guidance and fire engineering tools, such as the widely-used STEPS software for evacuation modelling.
Essential academic, professional qualifications and experience:
- Fire Engineering degree or related post grad - Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers - Chartered Engineer (or close to becoming chartered)
Essential competencies / skills:
- Fire/smoke modelling, means of escape, fire detection systems, fire suppression systems, performance fire engineering
- Knowledge of the British and International standards to include: BS 7974, BS 9999, NFPA 130, NFPA 101
Desirable academic, professional qualifications and experience:
Fire Engineering experience for a number of years producing written documentation for stakeholders and fire services approval
Desirable competencies / skills:
A proven track record with fire engineering related to tunnels and railways or other transportation systems.
